For some time now, the PLC has come up with a Scalextrics evening when asked for programme ideas. In Decembers exciting edition of the PLC, it was decided that we should set up a four lane Scalextrics track at the Scout hut and leave it up over the Christmas period. The Leaders were very conscious that such events always took longer to set up than they got time out of them so the Christmas holidays were ideal.
Bright and early on the
morning of the 30th, a number of Scouts, three Leaders, an
ex-Scout and a Venture (almost) turned up at the hut for the
practice laps. The track had been set up the night before and was
a combination of many people's life collection of Scalextrics! It
was big! Final adjustments were made (the addition of crash
barriers and the cannibalism of a number of noticeboards to hold
up the bridge) before the break for lunch.
After lunch, more Scouts turned up for the afternoon's Grand Prix
of Saltdean. Each Scout had two races with each car in each lane
and as the day went on two clear leaders emerged. While the
Scouts were not racing it was their turn to take part in possibly
the more active role of corner mashalling! It wasn't until the
final rounds that it was clear that Andrew Ruck was the new Grand
Prix champion of Saltdean winning a trophy that had not been
presented for almost ten years.
At the end of the event it was decided to hold the Scalextrics event every six months thereabouts - once in the Summer and once at Christmas.
Everybody is looking forward to the next Grand Prix.
