Perhaps the most heartening
thing for Scout Leaders is to see Scouts that they have
trained succeed! The 42nd Brighton team successfully
completed the 1997 Overland
Competition Hike, finishing in 23rd place. There were
66 teams entered and, of these, only 48 actually managed
to finish. After two years in which our team were unable
to finish (for illness or injury) it is good to see the
42nd up there with the top third of the county's hiking
teams. Very well done, Dan Garner, Andy Ruck, Chris
Almond and Team Leader, David Oxley! They Also Serve.. While the Overland Team were slogging uphill and down dale, other members of the 42nd were also at work. Up on the Devil's Dyke, a checkpoint for the hike was set up and manned by Leaders Tony, Pat and Dick, GSL Stewart Passingham, AVSL Steve Kirk, Skills Instructor Jon Thornton, Venture Scouts Nigel and Gary and Scouts Lloyd Passingham, Phil Colyer and Ben McManus. Pat and Steve checked the teams in and out, the Scouts made bacon sandwiches, cups of tea and coffee and a mess generally! Everyone else had to submit the visiting teams to an "incident". This consisted of a kit of spare parts which had to be assembled into a working compass. As the kit included (amongst other things) a belied sweet and a paper tissue, some teams had great difficulty deciding which parts to leave in, which parts to leave out and which to eat! Thanks from Tony to all the workers - we had to meet at 6 o'clock in the morning! What greater dedication can you ask for? |
Badges Following the visit from New York Scout Kevin, Dick has managed to obtain a supply of Boy Scouts of America badges, or "patches" as they call them. If you need a badge for a camp blanket or hat, see Dick and be prepared to haggle! Awards Pathfinder: Paul Beven St George's Day Parade. At the end of the month, on the 27th, we will be parading to the Dome in Brighton yet again. We always have a good turn out for this event and we must again make the effort to show the rest of the District how good we are! This is not as "I don't feel like it.." event - this one is a "I must be there"! A Walk in the New Forest. In November there will be a major weekend expedition to the New Forest! Full details will be available later in the year but hiking and wide games are on the agenda! Watch this space! Night Hike For those Scouts who qualified last year, Dick is running another Night Hike and Sleepover after the meeting on Friday 18th. |
